update

1. Obtain atleast a 2:2 in BSc (Hons) Marine Biology
YES this has been completed!

2. Make muffins or a fruit loaf each week, and eat for breakfast
Well, I started off with this, but then I'd go to get a muffin the next morning and they'd all be gone, as someone else had eaten them. Sooo I'm thinking it may be more of a Uni thing. Howevs, I'm still not really eating breakfast. More than I used to, but maybe only once a week.

3. Learn shorthand
I had completely forget about this!! Shiiit. I don't even know where to begin. Can you take courses?! Need to look into this!

4. Read everyday
Yeah this is going well. Although after The Bell Jar, I moved onto Wicked. Which is the book of the broadway and westend show. I absolutely LOVE the show, but the book is waaay diff. I thought it was going to be a childs book that I would get through quite quick. It's actually pretty tedious with some really strange goings on! So I havent really got into it and am only reading a little bit here and there. I've now got to the point where I want to finish it so I can start a new one so have begun to read it a little bit more. But yeah, I'm doing this challenge!

5. Plant a tree
I don't know where to do this? I thought there'd be tree planting events, which I've been to before, but can't seem to find any, and my parents don't really want me to plant a tree in the garden, so I don't know what to do!

6. Volunteer
I sent of some emails yesterday. One to Foxburrow Farm, which is a nature reserve near home. And asked if they needed any help with their open days. They do activities for children like Bushcraft, and there's a Charlotte's Web day coming up and a Peter Rabbit and friends day, which would be fun to help out at. There's also a Shreks Mud-tastic activity day. ARGH SO EXCITED!! I'm going to meet them tomorrow to talk about volunteering.

Also sent an email to the PSP Association. This is a charity to raise awareness for PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy). It is a brain disease that 6 people in every 100,000 suffer from. Making there be around 4000 known sufferers in the UK. However many people are often misdiagnosed and there are estimated to be another 6000 on top of that 4000, that are having to live there lives without knowing is wrong with them. There is no treatment. It effects eye movement, swallowing, mobility, speech and balance. As it is progressive it means the disease gradually gets worse. It is so horrible as
it robs people of the ability to walk, talk, feed themselves or communicate effectively with the world around them, yet they usually remain mentally alert. It all ends when the condition has got so worse that starvation occurs, and swallowing is impossible. Unfortunatley my Grampy has this disease, he can't do anything for himself and is only able to sit in his wheel chair all day. You can't even carry out a conversation with him. He now has carers that come to Nanny and Grampys house 3 times a day, as before it was Nanny taking care of him all by herself and then she broke her hip and was unable to anymore. So yes, I have emailed them about helping out at events they are holding, such as Music Days and Triathlons and things like that!

7. Own 20 skirts
I am making headway!! I will attach pics of them all I think!! But not right now, because that means taking photos and finding them, and I'd rather do other things. But I think I have about 6 left to get? Something like that. It's way easier than I thought! haha.

8. Learn to make lasagne
Still haven't done this. Maybe at Christmas or Easter. Got to save something for next year!

9. Have a piece of fruit everyday
Err...I do when I remember?! haha. I think I must do, yeah!! But have a lot of veg at home. At Uni I'll def have fruit everyday.

10. Have more of a daily routine
Um. Yeah I think I have. Although still don't go to bed so early. And then get up about 9. Would prefer to be up at 7 or 8 I think!

11. Go to a concert
Nope, yet to do!

12. Sleep under the stars
Nope, yet to do!

13. Go swimming in the sea
DONE. With proof. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpoPPnaxXnQ

14. Buy an original piece of art
SO nealy did this on a day trip to Edinburgh. But I got so confused as to whether it was original or not! Because they were lino type prints, and there was like however many of the prints, and so it wasn't unique! And that's what I want really. So didn't go with it in the end.

15. Treat Mum and Dad to a meal out
Hmmm may do this towards in the Christmas holidays I think :)

16. Go sightseeing in London on an open top bus
Need to do!

17. Give blood
Arranging! I have lost my card, and have no clue of my number. Once I have these details or re-register, this WILL be complete

18. Become an NQT
Eeeeeeeee :D

19. Wear wellies and go on a really muddy walk
Christmas!

20. Wear a watch
YES! love it. Although may stop wearing it to work because it gets messy, and I don't want that!

21. Go horse riding
Hopefully Sunday this will come true! If not Sunday then sometime this summer it shall happen

22. Keep a diary with an entry atleast once a week
I have changed this, because it ended up being a "wah wah wah" type diary haha. And I don't want that. So i just update it with little bits here and there, of quotes I've heard or lyrics, or little memories of trips out and stick nice little things in there from days out and things like that instead.

23. Win a competition
Ooo I have entered SO many competitions this last month. I have to win something. But the closing dates aren't yet. I will continue to enter more though!

24. Learn to juggle
Yes! As proven in the video above!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpoPPnaxXnQ

25. Make a new good friend (on my new course)
Course hasn't started yet...

26. Buy a Big Issue
Not yet done

27. Watch a new film once a month
So far so good!

28. Dance in the street
Ermm. Skipping doesnt count does it? So no, havent done this. I will in Plymouth.

29. Learn to knit
No. BUT i have purchased a tea cozy knitting book. I may take it on holiday with me! haha.

30. Become a published scientist(!!)
Having weekly meetings. Who knows!

books!

Thought as I'm going to be reading more books, I might just keep track of the ones I have read over the year. An online bookshelf type thing. As I finish one I will post a picture of it. If you are interested in one of the books and want a review, then I'd be happy to do that for you too!

Wednesday 30 June 2010

the finalised list

So here it is. All together at last. And it starts tomorrow!

1. Obtain atleast a 2:2 in BSc (Hons) Marine Biology
I get my Uni results next week, and to be able to go on to do my PGCE course, I need to have achieved a 2:2 in Marine Biology. I really hope I can do it, obviously this isn't something I can change this year if I don't, but I really want to get onto the course, and so I need to gain this in order for my years plans to be accomplished! Mean I'll also get to attend graduation and where a funny hat! Always fun.

2. Make muffins or a fruit loaf each week, and eat for breakfast
I never eat breakfast or have a drink in the morning, and so I thought if I have something tasty to eat, I am much more likely to get up that little bit earlier and have a cup of tea (with my new tea pot and mugs! :D ) with some brekkie. It does set you up for the rst of the day, so I do really want to change this. I have already gathered lots of recipes and been testing them out. Want to do more baking at Uni too, and this will sort that problem out!

3. Learn shorthand
It's just something I've always wanted to learn! It looks so cool and egyptian like. Don't think many people use it nowadays, and I probably won't get the chance to ever use it, but I'd like to have that option there!

4. Read everyday
I looooove books and reading, but hardly ever read. When I go on holiday in those 2 weeks I always get through a crazy amount of books, and then carry it on for a few days once I get home, but then it fizzles out. With my birthday money I have bought almost 30 books that are sitting to be read. In the last 2 weeks I have got through four of them and am now on my fifth, so I'm making head way, but just want to make sure I keep it up.

5. Plant a tree
I planted a tree once before when I was at Brownies. We were all put into pairs, and off we set. I never been back to see the tree I planted, and don't know if it will still have the plaque we made for it so even be able to recognise it. But I'd love to have my own little tree, but also feel like I've made my own little contribution to the planet. Just something fun to do.

6. Volunteer
I have done a fair amount of volunteer work at various different places. Mostly involving animals - cleaning out cages, pens and stables, doing pony rides for disabled children, showing off and walking around big Suffolk Punches for them to awe at, or helping out at the RSPCA. But the things I've done haven't really made a difference to anyones life. I'm not sure of the type of charity I'd like to volunteer with, but it would be nice to do something for someone else who could really do with a helping hand. It is possible I may join the volunteer group at uni (ViP) and I think they go to a nursing home once a month and read and chat to the elderly people. I think they do beach cleans, and go to a monkey sancturay aswell, which could be fun!

7. Own 20 skirts
Well first I need to count how many I already have (I'm only counting everyday skirts that I can wear all year round. Not those I'd wear for work, suit skirts, going out skirts or summer skirts etc). I just counted 9. Altogether I think I must have had over 20. But they don't count. That means in the next 12 months, I have to buy 11 skirts...!!! Hmm, this could be more of an effort that I thought.

8. Learn to make lasagne
I don't know why I added this. It would just be a good thing to be able to make well. Lasagne always must be eaten with salad cream. Yum.

9. Have a piece of fruit everyday
I pretty much do this already. Have grapes, strawberries and an apple with a sandwich for lunch normally! Just want to keep it up while I'm at Uni.

10. Have more of a daily routine
I always feel so much better witha routine. Getting up early and going to bed at a reasonable time. If I lay in bed all morning then I feel so sleepy for the rest of the day.

11. Go to a concert
Don't remember the last concert I went to! That's how bad it is. Guess maybe the summer ball could count, but not really. I want to go see someone I actually like and go jump and sing like a loony

12. Sleep under the stars
Just sounds like a nice thing to do. Hopefully on a nice night, and not alone, because that would be scary.

13. Go swimming in the sea
Yeaah! Love the seeaaaa! Will defo go in at some point, but I wanted atleast one thing I knew I could cross off the list!

14. Buy an original piece of art
And maybe by someone who is just starting out. Help them along their way, and you never know they may end up a famous artist, and I'd have snagged a bit of their work for right bargain :)

15. Treat Mum and Dad to a meal out
They've given me lots of the last 21 years. Need to treat them to a nice night out

16. Go sightseeing in London on an open top bus
Want to be a tourist for the day, and as bad as it seems I probably haven't been to most of the places it would take me. Would be nice to go and see them all. Plus the last time I went on one of those open top tour buses, it was in Chicago - the windy city - it tipped it down with rain and was so so windy. I had my anorak on exactly like kenny from southpark. Hopefully this will be an improvement

17. Give blood
I've been a registered donor for a while, but there was always a reason why I couldn't give blood. I don't think there is any reason now why I won't be able to. Actually, I have just thought of something. Will contact them and see if it is OK. But I'd really like to go and donate. Plus my parents have just signed up, so it's something I could go to with them, as before I would have been by myself

18. Become an NQT
Pass my postgrad course, and become a newly qualified teacher. A teacher!! Shocking.

19. Wear wellies and go on a really muddy walk
LOVE THE MUD! haha. Haven't done this in far too long. I'm thinking an autumn rainy day. Yes!

20. Wear a watch
Well, I showed this list to my Mum about a week or so ago, a few days after I had been eyeing up a watch that could possibly be a 21st birthday pressie. This was just a major hint, that "Mum, I really really like this watch!" On Sunday, I received that watch. I will wear it more days than I won't wear it. That's the plan at least. It always feels like such a grown up thing to do as well! Well to me it does. And i suppose I'm growing up. I need a watch to show everyone that!

21. Go horse riding
I miss horse riding so much. Want to get back into it. Hopefully I'll be able to go on a few hacks this summer, and maybe some in the winter when I'm back home too

22. Keep a diary with an entry atleast once a week
I have bought a very pretty journal to help me do this. When I was younger I loved the diary type books, and it always made me want to writ emy own diary. But I only kept with it for a week - if that - and then it was forgotten about. But whenever I find those entries that I did write, they always make me laugh. This way I can record my year as a 21 year old. Hopefully graduating from University, starting my career, and starting my life really! It's a big year for me, and I want to remember it.

23. Win a competition
I love that feeling when you win a competition. However, if I win one, then I won't stop. This is going to be an obsession I can tell. I'm going to see how many competitions I can win in a year. Last year I won some lipstick. I'd completely forgotten I'd even entered te competition, and then a parcel dropped through my door. I opened it and there was a congratulations letter from Rimmel, and my new lipstick. It was a disgusting colour, but did that stop me wearing it with pride? No. I had won that lipstick and was going to show it off to everyone. However, as the night went on, and i got more and more proud of my lipstick, I decided to keep whacking more and more of it on. My best friend Jess, was down visiting at the time too, and she suddenly became overcome with pride for her lipstick winning friend, so she smeared on the colour aswell. By the end of the night, our top lips had tripled in size and started near enough by our noses. I think we nearly used the whole thing up. The pictures still make me laugh. It was everywhere. I want to have the feeling of pride :)

24. Learn to juggle
Such a nerdy/cool thing to do. I ordered myself some pretty funky ones online the other day, and as soon as they come through I am going to be on my way to being a juggling superstar. Apparently it's quite easy to pick up, and with practise you can get quite fluent and start doing tricks. Woohoo!

25. Make a new good friend (on my new course)
It's always nice to have someone to meet with before lectures, or to sit next to and have a catch up with, and someone to help you with assignments etc.

26. Buy a Big Issue
I have never given it a chance, and feel like I should. I'd help out the person selling it too! I remember once it had Busted on the front, and I thought about buying it but never did. I'm going to wait until it's someone decent on the cover though.

27. Watch a new film once a month
I like watching films, and all the DVDs I've got, I've watched so many times. Hopefully this will add a bit of variation!

28. Dance in the street
I used to work at C103 (a nightclub) and when I would walk home from work, there would be hardly anyone about, so I used to put one of my ear phones in (the other was out so I could hear footsteps if someone was creeping up on me!!) and would just boogey along the pavement. Maybe let out a little sing along here and there. Was lots of fun. Those streets that people were hurridly walking along a few hours previously, I was now dancing along. I used to do it on the way back from the cinema, if I'd been there alone too. Haven't done it recently, and need to!

29. Learn to knit
I was struggling for ideas, and a very lovely person suggested this for me. I was a bit unsure at first, because if I've ever done it in the past I've just knitted scarves. Not with any patterns in, just rows and rows of the little knit things...and would never finish it. This time I'm going to get serious with my knitting skills. I am going to make mittens, hats, impressive scarves, snoods, maybe even a tie.

30. Become a published scientist(!!)
Now this wasn't actually on here. It was to just update this blog every week. However, I checked my uni emails for the first time in a month, and saw that on the 30th May, my dissertation advisor had emailed me to say he thinks I'll be able to get my dissertation published, as it touches on new work that hasnt been done before. So we're going to work on it over the next however long, and then submit it to some papers, and see if anyone is interested! I'm going to put a lot of effort into it, because it would be SUCH an accomplishment. I would be the first author too, so it would be cited as Skippins et al.. 2010 or 2011, whenever it may be. Eeee!! It won't just be Skippins, as my advisor will be reading over my drafts and helping me along the way and talk through what sort of bits I need to change or statistics that need to be done. So he will be a named author, and I'm assuming Helena will be an author too. Atleast I hope she is. She helped me a hell of a lot through the process, what with the set up of it and everything, so I hope she gets a say too! Never thought I would ever get this opportunity, so very excited about it, and going to grab it with both hands!

And that's the list! Hope I remember to do the weekly things, and what not. Sure once it's been going a few weeks I'll get into the groove, and all will be OK. What an exciting year!!
xx
